HOW TO GET YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE

1.

First Aid Course

The first step in your driving training is attending a first aid course. The course certificate is valid for 6 years.

  2.

Application Form

You can download and print the application form 103 for the learner's permit here. Please fill in the form in accordance with the regulations.

  3.

Eye Test

Your next step is to take an eye test with a certified optician. Remember to bring along your learner’s permit application form. The eye test is valid for 2 years.

  4.

Road Traffic Department

Submit your completed application form (including the eye test, a passport photo, your identity card/residence permit and your first aid certificate) to either the road traffic department or the residents’ registration office. You can submit your application one month before your 18th birthday at the earliest. For more information on the road traffic department, click here.

  5.

Basic Theory

Your next step is studying traffic rules and regulations for a basic theory exam. If you already have a licence of the category A, sub-category A1 or B1, you will not have to retake the theory test.

  6.

Theory Exam

You can sign up for the theory exam online using the PIN and the PID you received in the authorisation letter for the theory exam. You can take the test one month after reaching the minimum age requirement at the earliest (category B: 18 years, A1: 16 years).

  7.

Learner's Permit

After passing the theory exam, your learner’s permit will be sent to you by mail. If you haven't reached the minimum age requirement at the time of the exam, you will receive your learner’s permit on your birthday.

  8.

Driving Training

You're now ready to begin with your driving lessons. You may also practice in private with an accompanying driver who has had their licence for a minimum of 3 years and is at least 23 years of age.

  9.

Driving Sensitization

Your next step is attending the obligatory driving sensitization (Verkehrskunde) course, preferably towards the beginning of your driving instruction. You can sign up for the course here.

10.

Driving Exam

To complete the first phase of your driving training, you will have to pass the driving exam, which is held by experts at the road traffic department. The test is usually taken with my driving school car. You have three attempts to pass the exam. After failing a third attempt, you will have to pass a test to prove your suitability for driving (information/sign up). You can find additional information on the driving test here.

11.

Probation Period / WAB Course

After passing the driving exam, your driving licence will be valid during a 3-year period of probation. During these three years, you will have to take an additional advanced training session (WAB Course). After attending the WAB course, you will receive your final driver's permit at the end of the probationary period.
